2009 H1N1 Outbreak

University of Minnesota related to 2009 H1N1 outbreak:

  • UMN currently has several swine isolates from TX, OK and KS collected between 2007-2009. Preliminary HA data on these isolates indicate that these are not the same viruses causing the current human outbreak (HAs are only 93% genetically similar).
  • UMN plans to fully sequence 30 recent swine influenza isolates to determine the genetic make-up. This could link to the history of the recent human cases.
  • UMN currently has in place USDA permits and capabilities to obtain swine influenza viruses and samples and can assist in virus characterizations.
  • Other activities include domestic and international swine surveillance and basic research on swine influenza viruses.

St. Jude related to 2009 H1N1 outbreak:

  • St. Jude currently has permits in place to accept domestic and international swine samples and viruses and is in the process of developing candidate vaccines, testing pathogenicity, generation of reagents, and the testing of samples.
  • Other activities include domestic and international swine surveillance and basic research on swine influenza viruses.
