Microarray Review Process

Proposals for Affymetrix GeneChip Human SARS array are being accepted and reviewed on a continuous basis.

PFGRC will be accepting proposals through 2011 without any imposed deadlines.

Requests will be reviewed in a confidential manner by the NIAID PFGRC review committee. Investigators will be selected on the overall merit of the proposal as reflected in the review of this proposal.

The requests will be reviewed based on peer review criteria. The agreement of the investigator to NIAID's guidelines for sharing and disseminating the research data will also be reviewed.

Review considerations include

  • Significance - Does the study address an important problem? Will scientific knowledge be advanced? What will be the effect of these studies on the concepts or methods that drive this field? What is the potential impact of these studies to the field?
  • Approach - Are the conceptual framework, design, methods, and analyses adequately developed, well integrated, and appropriate to the project. Is the project technically feasible? Does the PI demonstrate knowledge of the capabilities and limitations associated with microarray experimental design?
  • Investigator - Is the investigator appropriately trained and well suited to carry out this work? Is the work proposed appropriate to the experience level of the principal investigator and other researchers, if applicable?
  • Resources and Environment - Does the scientific environment in which the work will be done contribute to the probability of success? Do the proposed experiments take advantage of unique features of the scientific environment or employ useful collaborative arrangements? Is there evidence of funds to support the proposed research for the duration of this microarray project?

It is anticipated that the review process will be completed within four weeks of the proposal receipt. NIAID may revise this timeline if the number of proposals is more than expected or if other program priorities take precedence.

Investigators will be notified electronically by NIAID as to whether they have been selected to have access to the available reagents, the number of microarrays available to them, and the detailed methods for gaining access to these reagents through PFGRC.

In publications of studies utilizing microarrays supplied by PFGRC, investigators are requested to acknowledge NIAID/PFGRC as the source of reagents.
