Primary Immune Deficiency Diseases

Primary immune deficiency diseases (PIDDs) are caused by inherited defects in the cells and other components of our immune system.

There are over 150 different forms of PIDDs, and, though they affect only about 500,000 Americans, these diseases are chronic and debilitating.

We conduct and support research to understand the cause and development of immune defects that lead to PIDDs.

Our goals are to improve diagnosis, facilitate genetic counseling, and explore new treatments and preventions for PIDDs.

Our institute is now home to the NIAID Primary Immune Deficiency Clinic, which provides diagnoses and disease management recommendations to those whose lives are touched by PIDDs.
