Eosinophilic Esophagitis Study at NIH

Do you have EE?

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) is an emerging allergic disease that often makes swallowing difficult and sometimes painful. It can also inflame the gut and cause multiple food allergies. If you have been diagnosed with EE and are at least 18 years old, you may be eligible to participate in a research study at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD.

What does the study involve?

The study will evaluate and follow people with various allergic, hypersensitivity, and inflammatory disorders. It is not designed to test new treatments; patients will be treated with standard therapies. Participants may be referred to other NIAID studies, as appropriate, but will not be required to join.

Participants will have a medical history and physical examination, plus standard tests for diagnosing and treating their specific disorder. Tests may include routine blood and urine studies, X-rays or other imaging studies, allergy skin tests, and lung function tests. Blood samples may be collected for research on immune system cells and other substances involved in immune function. Generally, about 2 to 6 tablespoons will be drawn at a time, but no more than 16 ounces will be collected over a 6-week period.

Where is the study taking place?

The EE study is being conducted at the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center (Building 10) on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. NIH campus is accessible by car and by public transportation.

How much does it cost to participate in a study?

There is no charge to participate. All study-related medical care, including clinic visits and procedures, are provided free of charge.

Will I receive payment?

Yes, financial compensation will be provided for study participation.

How do I find out more or volunteer?
