NIAID Clinical Research Transition Program

The NIAID Clinical Research Transition Program was initiated in 2006 to provide opportunities for physicians to gain clinical and translational research experience in association with an NIAID DIR laboratory. The program aims to increase the pool of well-trained clinical investigators who are competitive for clinical tenure-track positions.

Applications are being accepted through December 1, 2007 for the July, 2008 start date.

  • One to three candidates per year will be selected for 2-3 year appointments.
  • Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree, be board eligible or board certified in a subspecialty (or equivalent), and qualify for credentialing by the NIH Clinical Center.
  • Candidates may choose the NIAID DIR laboratory in which they will work (with the concurrence of the laboratory chief and the DIR director).
  • Candidates will be evaluated by a search committee composed of NIAID DIR investigators with clinical research interests. The committee will also review participants’ progress during their appointments.
  • Participants will be paired with an NIAID senior clinical investigator who will serve as a clinical research mentor.
  • Starting salaries of approximately $120,000 per year, independent resources and staff will be provided.
  • After completion of the 2nd year, participants are encouraged to apply for available tenure-track or staff clinician positions at NIH or elsewhere.
  • The application package must include a CV, names of three references, a two-page research proposal, and a letter of support from the accepting NIAID lab chief. Submit application materials via e-mail to Dr. Karyl Barron (kbarron@nih.gov).  Competitive candidates will be asked to make a presentation of their research accomplishments and plans to the search committee.
