  1. 1998 Update of Division of Intramural Research Activities

Thomas Kindt, Ph.D., Director, Division of Intramural Research gave an update on DIR activities. He informed Council about reviews of DIR labs and described the Division’s minority programs, including the Underrepresented Minority Postdoctoral IRTA Program and Underrepresented Minority Undergraduate IRTA Program. The programs have succeeded in increasing the numbers of doctorates trained from 4.9 percent between 1987 and 1996 to 14.5 percent in 1997.

He also discussed the Malaria Vaccine Development initiative, including the malaria vaccine development unit, to begin in December 1998 and a research and training center for field trials in Mali, which is near completion.
