  1. STD Vaccines: Challenges and Opportunities —

Penny Hitchcock, D.V.M., Chief, Sexually Transmitted Diseases Branch, DMID, NIAID


At Council, Dr. Hitchcock presented a brief overview of the state of the STD vaccine research. She reviewed the most prevalent diseases and their public health significance while highlighting advances in STD vaccine development. The NIAID plans to conduct several clinical trials in the coming year. Promising gonorrhea, HPV infection and chancroid vaccines are in various stages of pre-clinical and clinical evaluation.
