David Lipman, M.D., Director, National Center for Biotechnology Information, National Library of Medicine
Just three days before Dr. David Lipman's presentation, NIH issued a press release, announcing its free Web site for life science articles, PubMed Central (formerly E-biomed), to be operational by January 2000. PubMed Central is now envisioned as a repository for publications from all the life sciences with screening of nonpeer-reviewed reports done by groups outside NIH. For the second part of his talk, Dr. Lipman showcased the array of resources his organization has built for the research community. At the NCBI home page, investigators can find molecular biology databases, journals, and a sequence similarity search tool called Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) to search microbial and other genomes. Software development tools can be downloaded for personal use.
