  1. Vaccine Research Center Update

Gary Nabel, M.D., Director, Vaccine Research Center, NIAID

Dr. Nabel presented an update on the activities of the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), which has expanded its scope to include HIV vaccines, improved smallpox vaccines, and ebola and other hemorrhagic fever vaccines. VRC's budget for FY 2002 is $50,195,000. For HIV, VRC is attempting to generate cell-mediated immune responses against a variety of HIV genes to enhance the breadth of the immune response. VRC scientists are working with clades from various countries to create multivalent vaccines. Other ongoing work includes preparations for trials for ebola and smallpox vaccines.
