General Microscopy

Instruments available:

Leica DMIRBE, Leica DMIRB, Zeiss Axiovert 100

Includes: brightfield, DIC, phase, or routine epifluorescence. Three inverted microscopes are available for general use. Two of these are available on a first come first serve basis. Use of the "videomicroscope" requires a booking and training on the use of the instrument and software.

These microscopes provide the full range of magnification from 10x long working distance through 100x oil immersion. Long working distance lenses are ideal for examination of cells in plates or dishes, while oil immersion lenses allow for very high resolution images. In transmitted light mode, DIC optics are available to allow visualization of optical sections. If plastic is present in the preparation, DIC cannot be used, so phase contrast is available. The two Leica microscopes are equipped with fluorescence illumination for examination of immunolabeled samples.

Users may note that these are all inverted microscopes. Because we are analyzing a variety of samples (some mounted on slides, others growing on plates), inverted microscopes are most advantageous.
