How Applicants are Selected
Admission to the program is highly competitive. Up to 20 outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and medical students will be selected to participate in INRO. Qualified applicants will be reviewed and evaluated by a panel of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) scientists. NIAID does not discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, national origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
How are participants selected?
The selection committee, consisting of NIAID scientists, will evaluate applicants on the following basis:
- Cover letter indicating future plans and how the program applies to your future goals
- Demonstration of commitment to a career in biomedical research
- Achievements, such as prior participation in laboratory research, extracurricular science activities, or other activities deemed relevant
- Two letters of reference (applications lacking the two letters of reference will not be considered)
- Academic achievements and grade point average.
If I have been selected, what should I do?
The deadline for applying is October 15, at midnight, eastern time. You will be notified in writing of your selection status by early December. Upon acceptance to the program, students will receive a detailed letter outlining the following commitment requirements for the program:
- Complete and submit a commitment letter.
- Submit an official transcript.
- Submit a faculty release form.
- For graduate and medical students, provide a letter from the registrar stating that they are students in good standing.
