How to Apply for 2009 NIAID Independent Scholars Program

Deadline: November 10, 2009

Applicants to the Scholars Program should be either near completion of a Ph.D. thesis or within two years of having received their Ph.D. Applicants with postdoctoral experience beyond two years will not be considered. To apply for a position in the Scholars Program, submit a CV along with the contact information for three individuals familiar with your research who will provide letters of recommendation. One of these individuals should be your thesis advisor.

Also include a one- to two-page summary of your research accomplishments and a three- to five-page five-year research plan. The plan need not be highly detailed, but it should clearly convey the biological question you plan to address if appointed as a scholar and the strategy you will take to answer the question.

Send these materials electronically to

Susan K. Pierce, Ph.D.
Chair, NIAID Independent Scholars Program Board

The deadline for receipt of applications and letters of recommendation is November 10, 2009. We will acknowledge receipt of your application and inform you when your letters of recommendation have been received and your application is complete. By December 1, 2009, applicants will be informed as to whether they will be invited to interview with the Scholars Program. Interviews will be conducted during December and January and appointments made as early as February 2010, although the start date is flexible.
