NIAID-Funded Clinical Research

NIAID pursues HIV/AIDS therapeutics clinical research through its Division of Intramural Research, individual investigator-initiated grants, and clinical trial networks administered by its Division of AIDS.

• NIAID Division of Intramural Research (DIR)
  This division conducts all NIAID in-house research. DIR scientists carry out basic and clinical research in immunologic, allergic, and infectious diseases. Patients are frequently admitted to the clinical service to participate in new and promising treatment or diagnostic procedures derived from basic research that was conducted in DIR laboratories.

Other networks working in collaboration with DAIDS on clinical research pertaining to adolescents and co-infections and complications of HIV respectively, include:

• AIDS Malignancy Consortium (AMC) conducts clinical trials of therapies for AIDS malignancies, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, primary central nervous system lymphoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, and cervical cancer.
• Adolescent Trials Network (ATN) is the only national study of HIV/AIDS in teens infected through sex or injecting-drug behaviors. Funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), ATN research will be able to inform the nation’s adolescent-specific HIV/AIDS scientific agenda to improve the prevention of HIV infection and the medical treatment of HIV-positive teens.
• Bacteriology and Mycology Study Group (BAMSG) directs trials for antimicrobial therapies of systemic fungal infections.
• Collaborative Antiviral Study Group (CASG) conducts studies to evaluate experimental therapies for severe herpes, congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV), human papillomavirus, respiratory viruses, enteroviruses, and hepatitis viruses.
• Neurology AIDS Research Consortium (NARC) conducts studies on HIV-associated neurological complications.
• Studies of Ocular Complications of AIDS (SOCA) conducts clinical trials and epidemiological research on ocular complications of AIDS, primarily CMV retinitis.
