Targeting HIV Vaccines

  • HIV exists in the body in two forms: free viruses and virus-infected cells.
  • Neutralizing antibodies may be required to eliminate free viruses.
  • CTLs may be required to eliminate HIV-infected cells.
  • A vaccine against HIV may need to stimulate both neutralizing antibodies and CTLs.
  • A third immune response or combination of responses could be the key to an effective vaccine against HIV.
