Non-Human Primate Research: SHIV

  • Scientists have produced SHIV, simian-human immunodeficiency virus, by putting the outer envelope of HIV onto an SIV core.
  • The monkey is immunized with a promising test vaccine against the HIV envelope.
  • Later, the monkey is challenged with an injection of SHIV.
  • If the HIV envelope test vaccine is effective, it may protect the monkey against the SHIV.
