Non-Human Primate Research: SHIV, continued

  • However, researchers want to test vaccines to HIV - not SIV- in monkeys. Therefore, scientists have combined a strain of SIV with a strain of HIV to produce SHIV- simian-human immunodeficiency virus. SHIV is a virus with an outer envelope of HIV but an SIV core.
  • The monkey is vaccinated with a promising vaccine against HIV envelope. Some time later, the monkey is challenged with an injection of SHIV. If the HIV envelope vaccine is effective, it may protect the monkey against the SHIV.
  • NIAID funds primate centers to test vaccines against HIV, SIV and SHIV in chimpanzees and monkeys.
