Mucosal Immunity

  • Approximately 80% of HIV transmission in the world occurs sexually.
  • To be effective, an HIV vaccine may need to stimulate mucosal immunity.
  • NIAID funds scientists around the country to study how vaccines can best be designed to stimulate mucosal immune responses to HIV and SIV infection, and to design tests to measure these responses. [Cooperative Mucosal Immunology Group]
  • NIAID funds the Mucosal Immunology Lab in Birmingham to conduct research on human mucosal immune responses to test HIV vaccines in clinical trials.
