Conformational Epitopes

  • Antigens are protein molecules formed by linking amino acids together to assume a particular shape that immune cells can recognize.
  • Scientists can link amino acids together to try to form a protein molecule, but it is difficult to produce a protein molecule that assumes the proper shape (conformation).
  • Researchers are designing new synthetic forms of the HIV envelope molecule that will assume the same shape as the molecule of the wild virus (oligomeric gp120).
