Research Activities

NIAID currently supports preclinical and clinical vaccine research in a variety of areas:

  • NIAID Division of Intramural Research Laboratories
Laboratories at the NIH campus that conduct basic biomedical research on HIV and the immune system.

  • The Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center
Laboratories at the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) that conduct biomedical research to facilitate the development of HIV vaccines.

  • Vaccine Designs and Concepts
A list and description of vaccine designs currently being investigated by NIAID-supported researchers.

  • Vaccine Preclinical Toxicology Testing
Information for HIV vaccine researchers on preclinical toxicology testing and preclinical product development to aid in translating research concepts into vaccine candidates suitable for human clinical trial testing.

  • Animal Models
Information about different animal models used to study HIV/AIDS.

  • Vaccine Assessment
Information about safety laboratories, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) processing laboratories, endpoint laboratories, and new technology/new assays.

  • Immunologic Adjuvants

  • Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects (CRISP)
Online database that can be used to search for ongoing research supported by NIAID.

  • Vaccine Clinical Trials
Information about collaborators, organizations, centers, partnerships, and programs that are currently conducting HIV vaccine research with NIAID.

  • NIAID HIV Vaccine Research Education Initiative
The NIAID HIV Vaccine Research Education Initiative (NHVREI) is designed to increase awareness about the urgent need for an HIV vaccine within communities most affected by HIV/AIDS, create a supportive environment for current and future HIV vaccine trial volunteers, and improve the public’s perceptions and attitudes toward HIV vaccine research.
