Topical Microbicides
Funding
In addition to investigator initiated grants, NIAID supports microbicide research through targeted program announcements (PAs, RFAs), which are designed to assemble consortiums of scientists and private sector entities to provide preclinical and early clinical development of worthy microbicide candidates. Recently, the NIAID Topical Microbicide Program has used or is using the following initiatives to support microbicide research:
Description: Supports focused microbicide innovation and development using the R21/R33 phased innovation and development mechanism. This is a milestone-driven program, wherein specific milestones are specified for the 2 year R21 portion of the award. If milestones are met and the research still meets Program priorities and there are sufficient resources the award will be quickly transitioned to a 3 year R33.
