Research Activities
NIAID focuses on basic and clinical research on viral replication and pathogenesis, virus-host interactions involved in pathogenesis, and immune responses; development of cell culture and small-animal model systems for virus replication; development of vaccines and therapeutics, especially new targets and novel therapeutic approaches for hepatitis B virus, and vigorous programs to develop and test vaccines against hepatitis C virus; and support of preclinical and clinical development resources. Notably, in addition to individual investigator-initiated awards, NIAID has established cooperative agreements and interagency agreements related to hepatitis research, including the following.
- Eight new cooperative research centers for the study of hepatitis C virus (HCV), each engaged in various aspects of the host immunological response to infection (RFA AI 04-028)
- Three partnership awards to industry partners for the development of vaccines for HCV
- Interagency agreement with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), through which the NIAID Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases provides support for the virology and immunology ancillary study conducted in NIDDK’s Hepatitis C Antiviral Long-Term Treatment Against Cirrhosis (HALT-C) clinical trial
