Mycobacterial Diseases

Global Partners and Professional Organizations

Federal Agencies and Global Organizations

NIAID works closely with other Federal agencies and global organizations to encourage research and efforts to prevent, treat and diagnose mycobacterial infections, including:

Federal TB Task Force

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its Division of Tuberculosis Elimination, which in 1991 launched the Federal TB Task Force  in response to a 20 percent surge in TB cases in the United States between 1985 and 1992. The Federal TB Task Force has undertaken the challenge of controlling TB in the United States by maintaining control of TB, speeding the decline of TB through targeted tuberculin skin testing and treatment of latent TB infection, and the support of basic and applied research to develop better diagnostic, treatment, and prevention tools as well as related behavioral and social research targeted toward understanding and improving patient adherence with therapy. Visit the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination and the Federal TB Task Force.

Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation

Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of effective TB vaccine regimens. Visit the Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation (non-Government).

European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP)

The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), which aims to accelerate the development of new or improved drugs, vaccines and microbicides against HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, with a focus on phase II and III clinical trials in sub-Saharan Africa. Visit the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) .

Foundation For Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND)

Foundation For Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), which is dedicated to the development of rapid, accurate and affordable diagnostic tests through public-private partnerships.  Visit the Foundation For Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) (non-Government.

Gates Foundation

The Gates Foundation, which, through its Global Health Program, encourages the development of lifesaving medical advances and helps ensure they reach the people who are disproportionately affected. Visit the Gates Foundation (non-Government).

Eli Lilly and Company

Eli Lilly and Company, which, as part of their philanthropic effort in multidrug-resistance tuberculosis, launched the Lilly Not-For-Profit Partnership for TB Early Phase Drug Discovery in partnership with NIAID. This unique endeavor is designed to accelerate discovery and development of new drugs to fight TB and make treatment of TB more effective, accessible, and affordable. Visit the Eli Lilly and Company (non-Government).

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Information and Research (NTMir)

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Information and Research (NTMir), Inc., which provides insight into the disease caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), and empowers the patient to participate in his or her own treatment. Visit the Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Information and Research (NTMir) (non-Government).

Global Alliance for TB Drug Development

Global Alliance for TB Drug Development, which is a not-for-profit, product development partnership accelerating the discovery and development of new TB drugs. Visit the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (non-Government).

World Health Organization

The World Health Organization, which is working to dramatically reduce the burden of TB, and halve TB deaths and prevalence by 2015, through its Stop TB Strategy and supporting the Global Plan to Stop TB. The Stop TB Partnership was established in 2000 to realize the goal of eliminating TB as a public health problem and, ultimately, to obtain a world free of TB. Visit the World Health Organization (non-Government)

National Hansen’s Disease Program (NHDP)

The National Hansen’s Disease Program (NHDP), which is the epicenter of Hansen's disease (leprosy) care, research and information in the U.S. The program included patient care at its facility at the Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge, ambulatory care network with 11 clinics in seven States and Puerto and makes referrals for treatment, consultation with private sector physicians and referrals for patients with Hansen's disease (leprosy)-related complications, treatment advances and educating of medical professionals about Hansen's disease (leprosy), conducting Hansen's disease (leprosy) biomedical research, and outreach to medical professionals with a comprehensive Hansen's disease (leprosy) training program. Visit the National Hansen’s Disease Program (NHDP).

Professional Organizations

In addition, NIAID also interacts with notable organizations to combat mycobacteria infections, including:

American Lung Association

The American Lung Association was founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis. The National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, as it was known then, was the first nationwide voluntary health organization aimed at conquering a specific disease. Visit the American Lung Association (non-Government).

American Society for Microbiology

The American Society for Microbiology is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world. The Society’s Division U is comprised of members involved with mycobacteria and its diseases, on a research, diagnostic, public health or teaching basis. Its mission is to encourage and facilitate the dissemination of information on mycobacterial biology, new diagnostics, therapies and vaccines for mycobacterial diseases. Visit the American Society for Microbiology (non-Government) and Division U (non-Government).

American Thoracic Society (ATS)

American Thoracic Society (ATS) anchors its core values in preventing respiratory disease and advancing the care of patients with disorders of the lungand thorax, critical illnesses and sleep-related conditions. ATS will set research priorities and share funding responsibilities with other medical, research, clinical, professional, corporate, patient, and nonprofit health organizations with interests in pulmonary and critical care diseases and disorders. Visit the American Thoracic Society (ATS) (non-Government).

Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) represents physicians, scientists and other health care professionals who specialize in infectious diseases. IDSA’s purpose is to improve the health of individuals, communities, and society by promoting excellence in patient care, education, research, public health, and prevention relating to infectious diseases. Visit the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) (non-Government).

International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD)

The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) is a non-profit, non-governmental voluntary organization, founded in 1920. Its members, organizations and individuals throughout the world are dedicated to the prevention and control of tuberculosis and lung disease, to disseminating information about the hazards of smoking and to the promotion of overall community health.
